Nearly 84 percent of Americans who buy free-from foods do so because they are looking for more natural or less-processed foods, according to new research from Mintel.
In addition, 43 percent of consumers believe that free-from foods are healthier than foods without the claim, while 59 percent believe the fewer ingredients a product has, the healthier it is.
Among the top free-from claims that consumers deem most important are trans fat-free (78 percent) and preservative-free (71 percent).
A non-GMO claim also remains important to free-from consumers at 58 percent, with 35 percent ranking it as one of the top three most important claims.
Sodium-free was also a popular claim, with 57 percent of those responding listing it as important.
